Adelaide United coach Josep Gombau brought on 19-year-old Bruce Kamau late in the game and the youngster won the spot-kick that Carrusca converted to seal the three points.
In Villa's final games of his A-League
loan stint before linking with his contracted club New York City, Melbourne started brightly.
Just as they did in last week's derby loss against rivals Melbourne Victory, City looked likely to open the scoring.
They almost did just six minutes in when Villa's volley was smashed towards goal by Damien Duff but Adelaide goalkeeper
Eugene Galekovic parried his shot on to the post.
It did not take long until City eventually took the lead, with Patrick Kisnorbo thumping in a header from Duff's corner after just nine minutes.
Villa looked a lot livelier this week and forced Galekovic into a good save after making a fool of Tarek Elrich shortly after.
Jonatan Germano, making his first appearance of the
season for City, was forced off on 27 minutes after he went down clutching his left hamstring and was replaced by youngster Ben Garuccio.
It then went from bad to worse for City when Djite converted a thumping header of his own from Awer Mabil's lethal cross to level the scores going into the break.
City piled on the pressure early in the second period just like they did in the
first, winning a number of corners and free-kicks that came to no avail.
Carrusca almost emulated City's former international marquee Orlando Engelaar with a sensational lob from half-way but his attempt was slightly off-target to the relief of Andrew Redmayne.
